In 1995, “You Oughta Know” introduced the world to a then-unknown Canadian singer named Alanis Morissette, and last night during the Grammy Awards, Beyonce worked the song into her performance of “If I Were A Boy.”

Co-written by Alanis Morissette and Glen Ballard, featuring guitar and bass from Dave Navarro and Flea (both of whom were in the Red Hot Chili Peppers at the time), shot straight to the top of the Billboard Modern Rock chart, powering sales of Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill to more than 33 million copies.

At the 1996 Grammy Awards, “You Oughta Know” won Morissette two trophies — Best Female Rock Vocal Performance and Best Rock Song —and Pill took home two more, for Best Rock Album and Album of the Year.

Since its release, “You Oughta Know” has also been covered by the likes of Britney Spears, and Beyoncé made it a part of her “I Am … ” world tour in 2009 and her Grammy performance Sunday.
